Kiddie comfort
"I would suggest cotton, lightweight, no buttons on the back side," she says.
In the book "Getting Organized for Your New Baby." Maureen Bard and Christine Zuchora-Walske write that cute features like bows, appliqués’ and collars should not be bulky, and should be positioned in such a way that the baby won't be lying on them.
Other important concerns, according to Bard and Zuchora-Wailske include looking for clothes with minimal seams and trim, making sure features on the inside won't irritate skin, and making sure the clothes aren’t too loose or too light.

HEY PREEMIES – TAG, YOU’RE NOT IT
Manufactures continue to over look the needs of preemies. Maybe there is not enough money to be made in targeting such a niched market. Medical personnel perpetuate this problem by telling parents to not bother with clothing for these babies because they will grow into newborn size sooner or later. They force newborn-sized nipples into their tiny mouths, reminding parents that the children cannot go home until they can suckle. Can you placed a golf ball into your mouth and suckle it? Preemie diapers made by a certain manufacturer, and used extensively in hospitals, are so big that they can go up to the infants’ armpits. Can you imagine the elastic of your underwear rubbing all day under your arm, let alone how funny you would look? We all have to endure the skimpy gown with our backsides flapping in the wind when we go to the hospital but we are at least given the dignity of a wrap. Most preemies are not even afforded the luxury of a simple shirt.

Don't Dress Your Premature Infant in Steel Wool
As any parent of a premature infant will attest, it is next to impossible to find clothing that is sized for babies 3-6 pounds, tiny nipples for bottles in which they can suckle, diapers, pacifiers, on and on. Some manufacturers have labeled their clothing as Preemie yet when they are put on these tiny babies they are still too big. Why? Because the average 3-6 pound baby is 12 ½ inches from wrist to wrist and manufacturers make their clothing 17 inches from wrist to wrist. Parents are destined to roll, tuck, and fold these garments until their baby has grown into typical newborn clothing that can take months.

“What we’re concerned about most is the baby’s comfort,” Dague said. “Preemies are not regular babies. Their skin is rice paper thin. They have different needs, special needs, and we want to make sure what we’re offering meets those needs.”
